Professional expertise behind QWave

QWave is developed by Darren Stainsby, Athletic Therapist trained at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Canada, with more than 30 years of experience in rehabilitation, sports medicine and photobiomodulation ( PBM ).

Since 1992, Darren has worked with both elite athletes and regular patients. He has been part of the support staff for Canada's national teams in hockey, bobsled, luge, and biathlon, among others, and represented Canada and Norway at several Olympic Games between 1992 and 2002.

Darren came to Norway in 1998 and founded Altius Gruppen AS in 1999. In 2012, he helped establish the Altius Clinic, which is today a multidisciplinary clinic with physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, manual therapists, massage therapists and orthopedic expertise. Photobiomodulation is an integrated part of the clinic's treatment offerings and is used across disciplines.

His interest in PBM began in the early 1990s when low-energy lasers were used in the work with national athletes in Canada. Through clinical work, he observed effects on, among other things, pain, trigger points, acute and chronic stress disorders, and tissue recovery. This led to a long-standing interest in the research behind light therapy and how photobiomodulation can be used as part of modern rehabilitation.

In 2022, Darren completed further training in photobiomodulation through the Université de Médecine Nîmes-Montpellier in France. He is a member of both the World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy (WALT) and the North American Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy (NAALT).

QWave was developed in response to a need Darren saw over many years in clinical practice. On the one hand, there are advanced PBM systems that are often expensive and primarily available to larger clinics. On the other hand, there is a growing market for red light therapy, where marketing often takes precedence over knowledge about Wavelengths , dosage and clinical application.

The goal of QWave has been to build a bridge between these extremes by offering Products based on established principles in photobiomodulation. Selection of Wavelengths , diodes and effect are made based on clinical experience, research and understanding of how light interacts with living tissue.

For Darren, training is as important a part of the product as the technology itself. That’s why QWave developed to help both practitioners and users understand the principles behind PBM , so that light therapy can be used in a knowledge-based and responsible manner.

This is the core of QWave -philosophy: Photobiomodulation should not be reduced to a trend. It should be understood and applied as a research-based treatment.
